Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) is best known for the light bitter flavour it imparts to savoury dishes in traditional tropical cuisine. Also known as Karela, this vegetable is closely related to cucumber. The bitter bite of Karela cleanses and clears excess Kapha, stimulates digestion, and supports Pitta and Vata wellness. It has traditional use, and extensive research, in balancing blood sugar.

Over the years, Karela has become well researched and a subject of international interest in scientific circles for its anti-diabetic and hypoglycaemic effects. Traditionally used for the maintenance of diabetes amongst the indigenous populations of Asia, South America, India and East Africa, in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, it was called a “medicinal plant in controlling the blood sugar” and “beneficial towards controlling diabetes”. Bitter Melon is respected for its ability to help maintain normal blood sugar levels and support healthy pancreatic function by promoting normal glucose metabolism. It also encourages optimal function of the circulatory system and supports a healthy heart.

Trusted Source: "It has been estimated that up to one-third of patients with diabetes mellitus use some form of complementary and alternative medicine. One plant that has received the most attention for its anti-diabetic properties is bitter melon, Momordica charantia (M. charantia), commonly referred to as bitter gourd, karela and balsam pear. Its fruit is also used for the treatment of diabetes and related conditions amongst the indigenous populations of Asia, South America, India and East Africa. Abundant pre-clinical studies have documented in the anti-diabetic and hypoglycaemic effects of M. charantia through various postulated mechanisms. This review is an attempt to highlight the antidiabetic activity as well as phytochemical and pharmacological reports on M. charantia. It concluded that M. charantia plays a very promising role in controlling blood glucose and thereby controlling the risk factor towards CVD. The Peer review noted that “Overall it is a good compilation of previously published papers related to M. charantia as a medicinal plant in controlling the blood sugar. As such a lot is known in that M. charantia is beneficial towards controlling diabetes, this review article unveiled so many intricate details of the plant and its applied aspects in medicine”."
